This is my new poem that has won the honor of being added to the anthology for Best Poets of America.
WHY AM I SO ASTONISHED?
Why am I so astonished? What was I thinking
When violence came to call?
It was invited, after all.
Our culture flirted with it in our movies and our art,
And now it comes eagerly to tear us apart.
Though powerful, its nasty deeds are done;
It strikes the weak and unexpected, our children.
To this news we cry out loud and beat our breasts...
Still, at the theaters, we watch the violence we like best.
But in real life, we are perplexed, as if we didn't know
That the behavior planted in our brain would surely grow.
How could this happen to a nation as smart as thee?
Remember: Be careful little eyes what you see.
